Under "Anciently it was said," the ancient explanations are presented; they somewhat resemble the distinct meaning and are not used now. Following the pattern it is easy to understand, so there is no need to refute them. Next, under "Anciently it was said this sūtra," the ancients had four errors: first, that the dharmakāya is impermanent; second, taking another realm as this one; third, taking the nirmāṇakāya as the dharmakāya; fourth, directly contradicting the teaching. In the refutation under "Now we maintain," where it says "father and son" and so forth: father and son liken capacity and response, first the simile and then the Dharma; donning and stripping liken essence and function, first the Dharma and then the simile. Both fail, as the meaning of donning and stripping is different; the previous text has already refuted this.
