Regarding the passage beginning "Question: Skillful means...", now this question is set up in order to open the starting point of the meaning of the four propositions; thus the present master's previous text naturally had two propositions; can one further form the remaining two propositions or not? From "these have..." downward, the answer is that there are fully four propositions; the latter two propositions have no distinct drift in principle, but merely lodge upon name and meaning to elucidate the features of the propositions. Therein, it first points to the preceding two; next, it lists the latter two propositions; third, from "as name..." downward, it cites a parallel to explain: first listing name and meaning, and from "due to skillful means" downward, it explains by the parallel; meaning is the import under the name, so they can mutually serve as gates. Therein, it first explains skillful means, and next, from "the true character" downward, merely explains by the parallel. First the parallel, and next, from "the Preface to the Madhyamaka-śāstra" downward, it cites proof: the real name and the real meaning mutually serve as gates. "Real" is the meaning; "middle" is the name; therefore, lodging upon the name "middle" to reveal the meaning "middle" is precisely the name serving as the gate to the meaning. The text only raises one side; one should also further say that it is also due to the real meaning being able to correspond to the name "middle"; because without the real a name is not established, he raises the real to adduce it.
