Next, from "refuting this" downward, it explains correctly relying on the present sūtra: first, it cites "within the one Buddha vehicle, discriminatively expounding the three" to prove the three that are identical to the one; next, it cites "that which you practice is the bodhisattva path" to prove the one that is identical to the three; that is, the one and three of bestowing the three for the sake of the one are precisely the three and one of opening the three and revealing the one. The former phrase takes up the past, hence saying "discriminatively expounding the three"; the next phrase reveals the present, hence saying "is the bodhisattva path"; because the past teachings did not expound this, the three and the one were still separated, and it was not said that they mutually revealed, that the three is the one or the one is the three. Because the present has expounded it, outside the one there are no three; these three are the three belonging to the one; that is, by means of the three outside the one from the past, they completely become the three belonging to the one; hence it says "revealing the three by means of the three." Since they have been opened to become the one, outside the three there is no one, which is still the one belonging to the three; that is, by means of the one outside the three from the past, it completely becomes the one identical to the three; hence it says "revealing the one by means of the one." Therefore we know that by means of the three outside the essence, the three identical to the one are revealed; by means of the one outside the three, the one identical to the three is revealed. Next, from "since the three and the one are not..." downward, it determines and concludes: wishing to introduce the three and one of causes and conditions below, it first determines it. Saying "since the three and the one are not different": this determines that the previous opening and revealing belongs entirely to causes and conditions. "Causes and conditions" is merely the stimulus and response of the transformative methods, and is also called acquired through cultivation.
