「爾時文殊」下第三尋來。有人問：序中在座，今云何海來者？今為答之。豈以凡情而度聖境？不起此會於海化物，義亦何辜？亦何在序一期益訖，去時豈要白知，來時大利方生與眾自海而至，若例地踊菩薩讚詞此經甚略，或當彼有廣文具有出會之語，而傳至此者略耳。

From "At that time Mañjuśrī" down is the third section, inquiring into his coming. Someone asked: 'He was seated in the assembly during the preface, so why does it now say he came from the ocean?' Now, in reply: How could one measure the realm of the sagely with ordinary sentiments? Without rising from this assembly, he transformed beings in the ocean; what harm is there in this principle? Furthermore, why must he remain after the benefit of that one period in the preface was completed? When departing, did he have to announce it? When arriving, great benefit had just arisen, and he arrived naturally with the assembly from the ocean. If compared with the eulogy of the bodhisattvas welling up from the earth, this sūtra is extremely concise; perhaps there was an extensive text containing words describing his departure from the assembly, but what was transmitted here was simply abridged.
