Fourth, regarding "the origin is one, traces are many" and so forth: the Huayan uniquely takes only the single calyx as the origin within the traces; because this origin is not the distant past, it makes the thousand petals become the traces within traces. It is merely that the calyx, viewed against the thousand petals, is taken as the origin. Even if the ten directions mutually serve as host and companion, the ten directions also do not depart from a single dust mote, and a single dust mote is merely on this calyx and these petals; one should know that these are merely environmental and primary rewards within the traces. Therefore, the many traces are shared with the other sūtras. Thus the trace preaching of the Lotus Sūtra is the same as the other sūtras, while the Huayan is only partly the same within the traces. However, having already extensively recounted the merging and penetration of environmental and primary rewards, for what reason did it not clarify the origin in the distant past? If we discuss the gate of origin as distinct from the other sūtras, the Huayan is then made distinct by the origin of the Lotus Sūtra. Although the Huayan has causes practiced in the distant past, that was merely the cause of a single round in the present day; it has not yet even spoken of an intermediate round of fruit, let alone multiple intermediate attainments of buddhahood. One should know that this difference is a difference from that [sūtra]; hence it says "the origin is unique." If one says they are not different, Gayā is still so, and could Huayan not be? When opened, both open the inconceivable oneness; this is using the distant origin of the Lotus Sūtra to differ from the near traces of the Huayan, so we know the gates of teaching cannot but differ.
