Regarding “or the three bodies mutually compared”: within one teaching, the three bodies themselves have superior and inferior; applying them to great and small, the meaning applies to both Distinct and Perfect. Next, regarding “or the three bodies individually are all small”: this is contrasting Distinct and Perfect, the Perfect being great and the Distinct being small. Regarding “parallel to the three dots, and so forth”: this is merely parallel, distinct, and neither; vertical and horizontal are metaphors for Distinct and Perfect, fully detailed in the third fascicle of *Cessation and Contemplation*. The ancient masters’ six interpretations are all vertical and horizontal; our master’s three interpretations are neither vertical nor horizontal. If one further distinguishes great and small within vertical and horizontal: the three virtues of the Hīnayāna are small, and the three virtues of the Distinct Teaching are great. “Also again manifesting the statement that he will enter nirvāṇa”: this points to the text after the opening of the traces. Once the traces have been opened, one can say that [the passing at] the twin śāla trees was demonstrating extinction to benefit beings; taking the present to verify the past, it is also like this.
