Regarding "approaching the sphere of intimacy": The Great Treatise asks: "How does a bodhisattva calm himself?" and so forth. The treatise answers: "Like an invalid tending his body," and so forth, fully as in the fourth fascicle of the Notes on the Zhiguan. As for "the three intentions, and so forth": as previously listed, these are the concentrated mind, the concentrated place, and the concentrated gate. Having listed them, one should then broadly explain and broadly differentiate them: "mind" means the mind capable of aspiration; "place" means the place among the five conditions; "gate" means regulating the mind through the five matters. Not having leisure to discuss them broadly, among the twenty-five expedient means he lists two in accordance with what is essential; such three dharmas are all to be approached closely. This explains intimacy in contrast to the previous distance; approaching this intimate dharma is therefore called "approaching intimacy."
