Next, from "furthermore, contemplating" onward, it connects the preceding and following passages, interpreting them entirely as contemplation. In this there are again two parts: first, it interprets by establishing the essence of contemplation and the marks of contemplation; next, from "altogether there are nineteen phrases" onward, it interprets by treating the eighteen forms of emptiness generally and specifically. When the beginning states, "'contemplating the emptiness of all phenomena as their true character' indicates the essence of contemplation," the true character is that which is contemplated, and by revealing that which is contemplated, the contemplating mind comes to have an essence. Next, from "not inverted" onward, it explains the marks of contemplation. When it says "nine phrases," this is because it differs from the eighteen below in terms of being simple or compound, so there are only nine. Being compound, there are only nine: first, "not inverted," etc.; second, "not retreating," etc.; third, "like space," etc.; fourth, "all paths of language," etc.; fifth, "unborn," etc.; sixth, "nameless," etc.; seventh, "measureless," etc.; eighth, "merely because," etc.; ninth, "always joyfully," etc. It briefly brings out three phrases to illustrate the mark of compound phrases, allowing the rest to be understood accordingly. The nine phrases here conclude with the "contemplation of always joyfully"; the eighteen forms of emptiness below extend only up to "unhindered."
