"Constantly staying away from kings," etc.: down to officials, this can be understood by analogy; not only for propagating the Dharma, but all others follow this. "Making this slander against monks," etc.: worldly slanderers say, "Since monks do this, did the Buddha permit it? Is the Buddha's Dharma naturally like this?" "Veda": fully explained as in *Notes on Cessation and Contemplation*, fascicle ten. The reason one is not permitted to associate closely with the Vedas is perhaps for fear that people might suspect that monks teach them saying the Buddha's Dharma is like this. Furthermore, non-Buddhists constantly look for faults in the Buddha; if one closely associates with this, they might say monks need them, meaning the Buddha's Dharma is inferior to theirs; therefore, the internal community is admonished not to closely associate with non-Buddhist texts. Down to the six truths, the twenty-five truths, and so forth, fully explained as in *Notes on Cessation and Contemplation*, fascicle ten. Down to chanting praises, it can be understood by analogy.
