「八精進」等者，具如《止觀》第二記。「又復不行上中」等者，約廢權說，故前三教名上中下，或指三乘或三菩薩。「不倚圓」等者，佛尚以異方便及餘深法用助正道，後學順教豈可固違？習實尚微而蔑偏小，須順佛旨將護物機。

"Eight diligences," etc.: fully explained as in *Notes on Cessation and Contemplation*, fascicle two. "Furthermore, not practicing the superior, middling," etc.: spoken in terms of abandoning the provisional, therefore the preceding three teachings are called superior, middling, and inferior, or refer to the three vehicles or the three bodhisattvas. "Not relying on the perfect," etc.: the Buddha still used different skillful means and other profound dharmas to assist the correct path; how could later students following the teaching stubbornly violate this? When one's practice of the real is still shallow yet one disparages the one-sided and small, one must accord with the Buddha's intention and protect the capacities of living beings.
