As for harmonization: because of borrowing the separate [teaching], harmonization is required. In it there are four parts: first, the direct harmonization, which means there are no longer shallow and deep; next, from "merely conforming to principle" downward, clarifies the reason for shallow and deep; third, in adducing proofs, first citing and next explaining; fourth, in adducing the simile, there are opening and joining. First, in opening, when it says "the new moon and the full moon," "the new moon" means illumination, referring to the moon's initial illumination. "The full moon" refers to facing each other, that is, when full, the sun and the moon face each other. The moon is not the new or full moon; by relying on the new and full moon there is waning and waxing, which is evident in joining the text. Where it says "and so on," one should cite the moon-love simile of the Great Sūtra.
