In the first text, regarding 'these views must be broken' and so forth: the idea is that where there are views, they must be broken, and where prophecies are aspired to, they must be given; how could one exclusively cite the Vimalakīrti and so forth? If evaluated in terms of the present sūtra, it must possess five intentions: first, to break the proximate prophecy attained through the provisional teaching; second, to break the mind of defiled attachment arising in those who first receive prophecy; third, to reveal the characteristics of prophecy and non-prophecy of the Mahāyāna gateway; fourth, to put to rest the expectant mind of those not yet fit for prophecy; fifth, for the sake of those who benefit from hearing about breaking attachment. The Mahāyāna gateway breaks the small; its meaning encompasses the characteristics of prophecy of the three teachings and four gateways, and so on.
