Question: The mind having nothing to attain is merely the meaning of biased emptiness. The Great Sūtra rebukes this, saying, 'Do not say that the Tathāgata only cultivates the original nature of all dharmas as empty and quiet.' Hence we know that emptiness is merely empty, which is what the two vehicles see. Furthermore, the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā and the Three Treatises may illuminate emptiness, but the Lotus Sūtra opens the provisional to reveal the real, and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra illuminates the eternal Buddha-nature; how could they illuminate emptiness? Would this not be like the rustic mute with salt, or the ancient physician prescribing milk?
