Answer: Entering the samādhi of the abode of immeasurable meanings is called the wheel of reading others' minds. Emitting light, shaking the earth, raining down flowers, and displaying the lands are called the wheel of supernatural powers. Arising from samādhi and extensively preaching the Lotus Sūtra to the end of the entire scripture is called the wheel of preaching the Dharma. Furthermore, speaking generally of the doctrinal gates, there are two kinds: first, the direct fruition, namely the Tathāgata's body; second, the dependent fruition, namely the lands and so forth. If he manifests the two fruitions—direct and dependent—of the buddhas, this is called the wheel of supernatural powers; if he speaks of the two fruitions—direct and dependent—of the buddhas, this is called the wheel of preaching the Dharma; and responding to capacities by showing these two is called the wheel of reading others' minds. Therefore, the "Life Span" chapter states, "sometimes preaching one's own body, sometimes preaching another's body," which refers to the wheel of preaching the Dharma; "sometimes showing one's own affairs, sometimes showing another's affairs," which refers to the wheel of supernatural powers. The introductory chapter extensively clarifies this meaning. Furthermore, the wheel of reading others' minds means knowing the disease and recognizing the medicine; manifesting supernatural powers and preaching the Dharma means prescribing the medicine according to the disease. Furthermore, for those who should generate merit, he manifests supernatural powers for them; for those who should generate wisdom, he preaches the Dharma for them. Furthermore, manifesting supernatural powers arouses faith, while preaching the Dharma generates wisdom in beings. In the great ocean of the Buddhadharma, faith is what enables one to enter, and wisdom is what enables one to cross over; thus the Buddhadharma is fully complete. Furthermore, the wheel of supernatural powers invisibly and secretly benefits beings, while the wheel of preaching the Dharma visibly and openly brings benefit according to conditions. Although the holy transformations are many, they do not go beyond the manifest and the secret. Furthermore, the wheel of supernatural powers skillfully initiates, while the wheel of preaching the Dharma establishes the fundamental tenets and imparts the teachings. Furthermore, the wheel of supernatural powers removes suffering and gives joy, while the wheel of preaching the Dharma eradicates delusion and produces understanding. Furthermore, the wheel of supernatural powers reveals the Buddha's karma of merit, while the wheel of preaching the Dharma reveals the Buddha's karma of wisdom. Furthermore, the wheel of supernatural powers rescues those in the three wretched realms to cause them to leave suffering, while the wheel of preaching the Dharma encourages those in the three wholesome realms to cause them to progress. Furthermore, the wheel of preaching the Dharma reveals the virtue of prajñā, while the wheel of supernatural powers reveals the virtue of the dharmakāya, as taught in the "Four Aspects" chapter of the Great Sūtra. Because of such various meanings, he abides in these three matters.
