Answer: Joy among the four immeasurables means celebrating another person's liberation from suffering and attainment of joy; the gate of rejoicing in accord generally follows along and rejoices in whatever merit is performed by all noble ones and ordinary people—this meaning is different. Moreover, the four immeasurables must be concentrated minds, whereas the present [rejoicing] covers both concentrated and distracted minds. Furthermore, joy among the four immeasurables rejoices solely on the basis of the fruition of escaping suffering, whereas the present [rejoicing] covers rejoicing in accord with both causes and fruitions. Joy among the seven factors of awakening is without outflows, whereas the gate of rejoicing in accord covers both with and without outflows. Joy among the dhyāna factors is a concentrated mind and is solely the feeling of joy, whereas the present [rejoicing] is broader. Joy among the five feelings is retribution, whereas the present [rejoicing] is the causal gate. That is delight in oneself; this is celebration of others. That is indeterminate; this is a wholesome dharma.
