10.94

四者名德一雙。觀音謂三種名，普門謂三密德。三名者，一觀世音生眾生口業善、二觀世意生眾生意業善、三觀世身生眾生身業善也。普門三密德者，一知他心普、二說法普、三神通普。三名謂生眾生三善則生善義周也，三密德則應物善盡也。下二問答正明三名三德，攝十方諸佛菩薩名德皆盡，所以受持功德多也。又觀音謂大悲心，普門明大悲事。悲者前則無際、後則無窮，亦無中間。所以前無際者，無始來有眾生則有菩薩悲，故此悲與前際等。後則無邊者，眾生若盡悲心乃息，以眾生不盡故悲心不息也。

Fourth is the pair of name and virtue. "Guanyin" refers to the three kinds of names, and "Universal Gate" refers to the virtues of the three mysteries. As for the three names: first, contemplating the world's sounds generates goodness in sentient beings' bodily karma; second, contemplating the world's intentions generates goodness in sentient beings' mental karma; third, contemplating the world's bodies generates goodness in sentient beings' bodily karma. As for the virtues of the three mysteries of the Universal Gate: first, universality in knowing others' minds; second, universality in expounding the Dharma; third, universality in supernormal powers. The three names, in generating the three kinds of goodness in sentient beings, mean that the generation of goodness is pervasive; the virtues of the three mysteries mean that responding to the goodness of beings is exhaustive. The two questions and answers below precisely elucidate the three names and three virtues, fully subsuming the names and virtues of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas in the ten directions; therefore, the merit of receiving and holding [this name] is immense. Furthermore, "Guanyin" refers to the mind of great compassion, while "Universal Gate" elucidates the activities of great compassion. Compassion has no boundary in the past, no end in the future, and likewise no middle. It has no boundary in the past because from the beginningless [past] there have been sentient beings, and thus there has been the bodhisattva's compassion; hence this compassion is equal to the prior limit. It is boundless in the future because only if sentient beings were exhausted would the mind of compassion cease; since sentient beings are never exhausted, the mind of compassion never ceases.
