Answer: It also explains and establishes the meaning of constancy and impermanence, as well as the meaning of cause and effect. In the past, the Three Jewels were of distinct substances, and were therefore impermanent; now the Three Jewels are of a single substance, and are therefore eternally abiding. Thus at the end of the chapter "Long Life" it says: "Just as your father and mother are each different from one another," one knows that it is therefore impermanent; because the Three Jewels are not different, they are therefore eternally abiding. Because the Three Jewels are of a single substance, the meaning of the fruit is established; and once the meaning of the fruit is established, the meaning of the cause becomes clear; therefore, this again explains and establishes cause and effect.
