第五明開覆。凡有四句：一者但覆不開，眾生煩惱覆一乘佛性也。二但開不覆，謂法華教正開一乘佛性也。三亦開亦覆，即昔五乘是也，為欲開一故說五乘名開，昔說五乘未得彰言辨一故五乘覆一也。四非開非覆，即是正道寂滅相也。

Fifth, explaining opening and concealing. There are four propositions in all: First, merely concealing and not opening: the afflictions of sentient beings conceal the one-vehicle buddha-nature. Second, merely opening and not concealing: the teaching of the Lotus Sūtra directly opens the one-vehicle buddha-nature. Third, both opening and concealing: this is precisely the former five vehicles; wishing to open the one, the five vehicles were preached, which is called opening; in the past when the five vehicles were preached, it was not yet possible to speak overtly to distinguish the one, and thus the five vehicles concealed the one. Fourth, neither opening nor concealing: this is precisely the tranquil mark of the true path.
