Answer: In the past, provisionally expounding the teaching of the three vehicles without stating that the three are skillful means—this was the closing of the three skillful means. The Buddha's provisional wisdom was that which closes, and the three gates of skillful means were that which was closed. Now, real wisdom explains that the three are skillful means, so the three gates of skillful means are opened. The Buddha's real wisdom is that which opens, and the gates of skillful means are that which is opened. As for the demonstrator and the demonstrated: although opening the gate that the three are skillful means, it thereby demonstrates that the one vehicle is the real. Real wisdom is the demonstrator, and the one vehicle is the demonstrated. Therefore real wisdom has two capacities: first, the capacity to open; second, the capacity to demonstrate. Just as a person's hand can open a door and also point out the objects inside the door: the objects inside the door are that which is pointed out (demonstrated), and the hand is that which points them out (the demonstrator).
