答：若不用疑執為索者，復取何文為三根人索耶？又鹿園已後《法華》之前，何經中說三乘情索耶？今明但《法華》時三根有疑故有索，爾前無疑故不索也。

Answer: If one does not take doubtful clinging to be asking, what other text could be taken as the asking of persons of the three faculties? Furthermore, from the Deer Park onwards and before the Lotus Sūtra, in which sūtra is the sentient asking of the three vehicles spoken of? We now explain that only at the time of the Lotus Sūtra did the three faculties have doubts and therefore ask; prior to that, they had no doubts and therefore did not ask.
