Answer: When the Buddha Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū expounded the Four Truths, he immediately expounded the twelve links of causes and conditions; Śākyamuni likewise followed this precedent. Furthermore, the Great Sūtra states: 'In the royal city [of Rājagṛha], he fully expounded the twelve links of causes and conditions for Kāśyapa.' The Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings states: 'First, for the sake of the śrāvakas, he expounded the Four Truths; in the middle, for the sake of the pratyekabuddhas, he expounded the twelve links of causes and conditions; and later, for the sake of the bodhisattvas, he expounded the six perfections.' Deducing from these passages, he expounded the Four Truths earlier and the causes and conditions later.
