Answer: The three carriages and the one carriage are both the principle expressed by the teaching; the three carriages are provisional, and the one carriage is real. The one messenger refers to the teaching of the One Vehicle; the two messengers refer to the teachings of the two vehicles; the teaching encompasses both cause and fruit. In this text, the three messengers are all spoken of inside the gate, while the three carriages and the one carriage are both matters outside the gate. The two messengers are provisional, and the one messenger is real. As for the great mansion and the thatched hut: the thatched hut is the principle and teaching of the Lesser Vehicle, while the great mansion is the principle and teaching of the Great Vehicle; these two encompass both cause and fruit. As for the conjured city, it refers to the fruit of the Lesser Vehicle, while the treasure trove refers to the fruit of the Great Vehicle.
