Answer: This was previously explained in brief; now I will elaborate further. Generally speaking, the great carriage fully encompasses both cause and fruit, gathering together beginning and end; there is only the One Vehicle, and no attendants. Now, in delineating the carriage and attendants, we discuss them in terms of the five levels of the Mahāyāna: First, the myriad virtues of the fruit stage constitute the carriage; that is, the person at the fruit level boards the fruit-carriage, while those at the cause level are all attendants. Second, distinguishing between within and outside the three realms: attaining the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas at the seventh stage and emerging from the three realms constitutes boarding the carriage, while the sixth stage and below are all attendants. The Commentary on the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra, explaining "able to move and able to emerge," states: "The forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas is emerging," where emerging means emerging from the three realms. Third, distinguishing between real and semblance [understanding]: real understanding upon entering the stages constitutes boarding the carriage, while the semblance understanding of the thirty minds constitutes the attendants. Fourth, the thirty minds possess both understanding and practice: the stage of practice constitutes boarding the carriage, while initial entry such as the ten faiths constitutes the attendants. Fifth, the ten faiths and the thirty minds all board the carriage, while the wholesome root of raising a hand or bowing the head constitutes the attendants. Explaining according to the Hīnayāna: the person of no-more-learning emerging from the three realms constitutes boarding the carriage, while the seven classes of trainees and ordinary persons are all attendants. The rest can be understood by analogy.
