The old masters said that the three carriages all take wisdom as their substance and do not include merit, for merit is shared with ordinary persons. The great carriage is likewise, taking only the Tathāgata's two wisdoms of exhaustion and non-arising as its substance. I evaluate this: It is not so. Below, the synthesis of both the great and small carriages encompasses both merit and wisdom. The text on the small carriages says: "Riding these three vehicles, they amuse themselves with the uncontaminated faculties, powers, factors of enlightenment, the path, dhyānas, liberations, samādhis, and so forth." How could one only take wisdom? The synthesis of the great carriage says: "Bestowing equally upon all the dhyānas and liberations of the Buddhas is called equal bestowal." How could it be only wisdom?
