Next is to distinguish the conditioned and the unconditioned. The old interpretation held that the three carriages specifically symbolize the conditioned. Why is this? A carriage takes movement as its meaning, so it is a carriage; the unconditioned has no movement, so it is not a carriage. The great carriage is also like this. I evaluate this: To cling to the parable is a great error, failing to examine the sūtra. Examining both the great and small carriages, there are two texts for both. The synthesis of the small carriages says: "Desiring to quickly escape the three realms and personally seek nirvāṇa," just as those sons sought the goat-carriage to escape the burning house. The synthesis of the deer-carriage also adduces both the conditioned and unconditioned to synthesize it; thus one knows that the three carriages possess both the conditioned and unconditioned.
