Next, the meaning of the five kinds of śrāvakas receiving prophecies or not receiving prophecies is explained. First are śrāvakas who regressed from the Great to study the Lesser, such as the cohort of Śāriputra. Second are śrāvakas who from the outset studied the Lesser. Third are those who make the voice of the Buddha path heard by all. Fourth are those who internally conceal bodhisattva practice and externally manifest as śrāvakas. Fifth are śrāvakas of overweening pride. Among śrāvakas of overweening pride, there are again two kinds: First are those who, upon attaining the four dhyānas, think they have attained the four fruits—as explained in the Treatise [on the Great Perfection of Wisdom], upon attaining the first dhyāna they think they have attained the first fruit, up to attaining the fourth dhyāna, when they think they have attained the fourth fruit. Second are those who do not necessarily attain dhyāna, but merely cultivate the contemplation of revulsion in a biased manner so that the three poisons do not arise, and think they have attained arhathood. Next, regarding receiving or not receiving prophecies: If it is a śrāvaka who regressed from the Great to become Lesser, determined according to stage, they are a person of the sixth mind or below; it is merely a prophecy before generating the aspiration. If it is a śrāvaka who from the outset studied the Lesser, it is also a prophecy before generating the aspiration. However, these two persons differ in excellence and inferiority: the first person had previously generated the aspiration, but the generation of the aspiration was not perfected, hence it is called 'not yet generating the aspiration'; the second person has not generated the aspiration at all. As for the third, who make the voice of the Buddha path heard by all, since this stage is broad, from the initial generation of the aspiration up to buddhahood they are all śrāvakas. If one takes people of middling capacity who through understanding refer to themselves as making the voice of the Buddha path heard by all, this is precisely determined in terms of the meaning of non-regression in stage, belonging to prophecy upon generating the aspiration. As for internally concealing bodhisattva practice, this stage is also broad; from non-regression in stage and above, all can have this, but taking it from ascending the bhūmis onward, this person receives a prophecy face-to-face. Among śrāvakas of overweening pride, there are three kinds of people: First are those who also get to hear the sūtra and also get to receive a prophecy, such as when Bodhisattva Sadāparibhūta preached the Lotus Sūtra for śrāvakas of overweening pride and bestowed prophecies upon them; this is a prophecy before generating the aspiration. Second are those who do not get to hear the sūtra and do not get to receive a prophecy, such as those who attained the four dhyānas mentioned in the Treatise [on the Great Perfection of Wisdom]; this person falls into the Avīci hell upon the end of life. Third are those who get to hear indistinctly but do not get to receive a prophecy; that is, the company of five thousand who get to hear the brief exposition but do not receive a prophecy.
