Answer: Some say it is solely the single dharmakāya; because the dharmakāya is non-dual, it is called single. The voice issues from the single dharmakāya, and taking its name from the dharmakāya it is called a single voice. Appraisal: The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, in explaining the physical marks, says: 'With a single voice responding to all sounds'; it does not clarify the dharmakāya, so this is not the explanation. Some say: within a single time multiple sounds issue forth together, hence it is called a single voice. Appraisal: The sūtra merely says a single voice, and does not say that multiple sounds issue forth together; this too is not to be adopted. Some say: the body is an Indian body, and the voice is an Indian voice, hence it is called a single voice. Appraisal: The Buddha is able to utter a single voice as appropriate, not restricted to India. Yet others say: among the five tones, he uses any one tone as appropriate. Appraisal: Since the Buddha relied on the traces of a particular region and received the sounds of a particular land, the meaning of the five tones applies generally; this too is not to be adopted. What is clarified now is that this meaning contains many aspects; we briefly clarify four kinds: First, relying on the 'Chapter on Medicinal Herbs', it clarifies that one great cloud covers universally and one great rain soaks everywhere, which is an analogy for the great Dharma voice of the One Vehicle, and hence is called a single voice. But those with great capacities awaken to the great and thus correspond to the great; those with small capacities awaken to the small, and the small is not called great, so the name 'single voice' primarily refers to the voice of the One Great Vehicle.
