Answer: Relying on the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, three kinds are briefly explained. First, whenever the Buddha emits a single sound, myriad kinds [of beings] understand differently, and sentient beings of the six destinies all consider the Buddha to be sharing each of their own languages. Second, he merely expounds a single teaching, yet according to the meaning it universally operates: those fond of giving hear giving, and those fond of discipline hear discipline, each receiving benefit. Third, it explains that the matter spoken is identical, yet joy and sorrow are both aroused. There are two matters here: as when speaking of the single teaching of suffering, four kinds of mind arise: some people hearing of suffering give rise to fear; some people hearing of suffering give rise to joy because they desire to be liberated from it; some people hearing of suffering give rise in their minds to disgust and detachment; some people hearing of suffering truly know it is suffering and cut off their doubting minds. Second, hearing four kinds of teachings, four kinds of mind arise: as when hearing of the suffering of the three wretched destinies, one is terrified; hearing of the sublime bliss of humans and gods, one rejoices; hearing of impurity, one feels disgust and detachment; hearing of cause and effect, one cuts off doubt. Between these two meanings, the former intent is correct.
