Answer: This is precisely the meaning of opening the provisional and revealing the real. Formerly, the evil paths were called nirvāṇa in order to guide [them] out of the three realms; now, nirvāṇa is designated an evil path to make them leave the two vehicles. They do not contradict each other. Furthermore, there are three propositions: first, evil and not good, referring to the three hundred [yojanas]; second, good and not evil, referring to crossing over the five hundred [yojanas]; third, both evil and good: the intermediate two hundred [yojanas] can cross over the three realms and are therefore good, but because they are a great affliction to the Buddha path, they are called evil. Hence the sūtra states: 'Seeking the two vehicles is called unwholesome.' Since it is called unwholesome, how could it not be an evil path?
