答：《法華》之前未開三為方便、一乘為真實，遂使求佛之人猶有躊躇大小之望，取佛之心未決定，故去佛道遠也。《法華》明有一無三，永息退心，求佛意決，故去佛道近也。

Answer: Prior to the Lotus Sūtra, the three [vehicles] were not yet revealed to be skillful means and the one vehicle [revealed] to be the real truth, with the result that people seeking buddhahood still wavered with expectations between the great and the small, and their intention to attain buddhahood was not yet determined; hence they were far from the Buddha path. The Lotus Sūtra makes clear that there is the one and not the three, permanently putting an end to the regressive mind so that their resolve to seek buddhahood is determined; hence they are near to the Buddha path.
