Answer: One must recognize two kinds of recipients. The first is recipients who do not awaken despite passing through teachings: those who do not awaken from seeing the Buddha's initial birth up through hearing the Lotus Sūtra are named recipients who do not awaken despite passing through teachings; these are people of the dullest faculties, who only awaken upon reaching the Nirvāṇa-sūtra. The second is those who had already attained awakening previously and now, upon reaching the Nirvāṇa-sūtra, advance further in awakening; like Kāśyapa and others of great, sharp faculties, it is for the sake of these persons that the Nirvāṇa-sūtra was spoken. There are also recipients with capacities who do not hear the previous teachings but directly hear the Nirvāṇa-sūtra, and immediately and fully recognize the Tathāgata's ultimate cause and fruition; they are called people of great, sharp faculties.
