Answer: Now I ask: is the elder surrounded by his retinue the dharmakāya or the saṃbhogakāya/nirmāṇakāya? If it is the dharmakāya, how could he have a retinue surrounding him, managing finances and giving and receiving? And how could it say that he halted midway in a city? If it is Śākyamuni’s nirmāṇakāya, then what body does taking off his precious attire and putting on coarse, dirty garments illustrate? What is now explained is that the elder adorned and dignified is the Rocana body; his managing finances and giving and receiving refers to the Rocana teaching. If so, Rocana’s form and teaching are contained within the Lotus Sūtra; how could the teaching of the Lotus Sūtra not speak of permanence? How could it still be called a half-letter [teaching]? If the Lotus Sūtra were an impermanent, half-letter teaching, the meaning of the Rocana Buddha’s teaching should also be the same.
