Third, the Chapter on Definite Determination states: 'Subhūti heard the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra explain non-retrogression, and also heard that in Prajñā there is retrogression; therefore he asked the Buddha: "Are these bodhisattvas definitely determined, or are they not definitely determined?" The Buddha answered: "They are all definitely determined. Being definitely determined means that all bodhisattvas, from the initial mind to the final mind, are non-retrogressing; therefore they are definitely determined."' The intent of this treatise clarifies that between Prajñā and the Lotus there is no superiority or inferiority. Because Prajñā and the Lotus equally clarify that all sentient beings are definitely determined to attain buddhahood, the two sūtras have no superiority or inferiority. Since there is no superiority or inferiority, both sūtras are equally called esoteric.
