Answer: When corresponding with prajñā, the non-dual contemplation of non-reliance and non-attainment becomes manifest before one. As spoken of in the chapter "One Thought," the bodhisattva possesses the ten thousand practices in a single thought; this is the vehicle of identical substance. When this contemplation has not yet become manifest before one, it is called the vehicle of different substance. However, from the initial generating of the mind one studies the non-dual contemplation, so from the time of the initial generating of the mind it is the vehicle of identical substance, possessing the ten thousand practices in a single thought; hence it is said that the initial generation of the mind and the ultimate [attainment] are not distinct. It is merely according to whether this contemplation is clear or obscured that the identical substance and different substance are distinguished. If explained in terms of stages: those who have attained the forbearance of non-arising are the vehicle of identical substance, and those who have not yet attained the forbearance of non-arising are the vehicle of different substance.
