Fifth is explaining the original and the trace. At first glance, all eight parables are matters within the trace. The Tathāgata attained buddhahood long ago; in the past, he manifested as a novice to preach the Mahāyāna, and down to stopping at a city midway today, this too is attaining buddhahood through skillful means. Therefore, all eight parables belong to the trace. However, the father and son seeing each other has two originals and two traces. First, the dharmakāya saw that the great spiritual capacity of the bodhisattvas had already matured, and thus manifested as Rocana to convert them; stopping midway at a city and not abandoning the family business are this very matter. Second, when Rocana attained awakening, he saw that the sons had only small spiritual capacity and no great spiritual capacity, and thus descended as Śākyamuni to convert them; taking off his fine royal garments and donning soiled, ragged clothes is this very matter.
