阿難是佛得道夜半生，年二十五方乃侍佛，則知前二十五年所說阿難不聞，後二十五年所說悉皆得聞。後二十五年凡有三類：一者得聞，如聞《法華經》等。二者不聞，如《涅槃經》等。三者亦聞不聞，如《淨名》一經凡有四會：菴薗二會阿難得聞，毘耶兩集阿難不聞。以何義故，一代之經皆稱我聞耶？

Ānanda was born at midnight when the Buddha attained the path, and only began serving the Buddha at the age of twenty-five. Thus we know that Ānanda did not hear what was preached in the first twenty-five years, but heard all of what was preached in the latter twenty-five years. Within the latter twenty-five years, there are broadly three categories: first, what he heard, such as hearing the Lotus Sūtra and so forth; second, what he did not hear, such as the Nirvāṇa Sūtra and so forth; third, what he both heard and did not hear, as in the single scripture of the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa where there were four assemblies in all: Ānanda was able to hear the two assemblies in the mango grove, but Ānanda did not hear the two gatherings in Vaiśālī. For what reason do all the scriptures of [the Buddha's] entire lifetime say 'have I heard'?
