This sūtra specifically clarifies the one great matter of causes and conditions—namely, opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision. The Buddha's knowledge and vision consists of what are called the four wisdoms: Tathāgata-wisdom, Buddha-wisdom, spontaneous wisdom, and teacherless wisdom. Knowing that hearing is without anything heard gives rise to Tathāgata-wisdom; hearing where there is nothing heard gives rise to Buddha-wisdom; these two spontaneously appearing before one is called spontaneous wisdom; and these three not being obtained from a teacher is called teacherless wisdom. Since hearing gives rise to the four wisdoms, in all that one undertakes one must thoroughly discern causes and conditions and simultaneously give rise to the four wisdoms to enter the Buddha's knowledge and vision.
