'Gṛdhrakūṭa' here means 'Vulture Peak'. Now, the summits of these five mountains each resemble something. The present mountain resembles a vulture's head; hence it is named 'Vulture'. After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, King Aśoka saw that its summit resembled a vulture, and dispatched people to chisel out two wings, two feet, and a tail, so that it appeared entirely like a vulture bird. Lu Deng's *Dili ji* (*Geographical Record*) states: 'The city and the mountain are separated by a total of fifteen li.'
