Regarding "Śāriputra": in full, it should be Śāriputra; *śāri* means body (śarīra), and *putra* means son, with the character *ra* omitted so that only *putra* is stated. There are two causes and conditions for being named Śāriputra: First, establishing the name from a past vow. When Śākyamuni was a potter in the past, he encountered Śākyamuni Buddha and made a vow, wishing to become a Buddha in the future named Śākyamuni, with a disciple named Śāriputra; hence the name was established from the original vow. Second, establishing the name from his mother. Because his mother's eyes resembled the eyes of a *śāri* bird, his mother was named Śāri. His mother was foremost in intelligence among women, and because worldly people esteemed his mother, they called him Śāriputra (son of Śāri); this was a name made for him by worldly people. Old sūtras named him "Son of the Egret," which still takes the bird's name. Or it is said that the *śāri* bird resembles an egret. His father was named Tiṣya; adopting his name from his father, he was therefore named Upatisya; *upa* means "following," and *tiṣya* is the name of a constellation. Furthermore, a sūtra states: "When the Buddha first saw the two persons coming, he had him change the name Tiṣya, allowing him to return to his original designation as Śāriputra; because in his past original vow he was named Śāriputra, he had him change his present-life name." Maudgalyāyana was also like this.
