Regarding "Kātyāyana": an old translation renders it as "shoulder vehicle," which is an error in these two characters. It should be "fan cord." His father died early, and his mother longed for him and did not remarry, like a cord tying a fan, hence he was named "Fan Cord." The Tripiṭaka Master said: "In ancient times there was a sage named Kala, translated here as 'superior thought.' This sage was complete in learning and thought superior to others, hence called 'Superior Thought.' He is of this sage's lineage, hence named 'Superior Thought.'" The *Zhu Fahua jing* states: "His clan was Kātyāyana, and he was the senior-most among his disciples, hence called 'Mahā-.'" We now consider that it should follow the commentary's explanation. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: "There was a Brahmin practitioner whose clan was Kātyāyana." There could not also be the metaphor of the fan cord used as his name; rather, since Kātyāyana is his clan, "Fan Cord" is simply his personal name.
