Regarding "Vakkula": translated here as "good appearance." By upholding the single precept against killing, he obtained five retributions of not dying: first, not dying when boiled in a cauldron; second, not burning on a roasting pan; third, not drowning in water; fourth, not decaying in a fish's belly; fifth, not being harmed by knife blades. A sūtra states: "For eighty years since leaving the household life, his eyes did not gaze at a woman's face, he did not enter a nunnery, nor did he preach a single verse to a woman. King Aśoka visited various stūpas to make offerings and gave many alms; upon arriving at Vakkula's stūpa, hearing that during his life he had few desires, was easily satisfied, and did not preach a single verse to a woman, he offered a single coin to it, but the stūpa did not accept it. King Aśoka said: 'This is true fewness of desires, even to the extent of not accepting a single coin.'"
