《釋彌勒所問經論》云「得內分功德為不退，得外分功德為不轉」，又云「得智慧為不退，得功德為不轉」，又云「得般若為不退，得方便為不轉」也。《法華論意》云「八地無功用，不為功用所動，復不為上地所動，自然而行，故名不退」也。

The Commentary on the Maitreyaparipṛcchā-sūtra states: "Attaining internal merits is non-retrogression; attaining external merits is non-turning back." It also says: "Attaining wisdom is non-retrogression; attaining merit is non-turning back." It also says: "Attaining prajñā is non-retrogression; attaining upāya is non-turning back." The purport of the Fahua lun is: "The eighth ground is without effort; not being moved by effort, and furthermore not being moved by higher grounds, one acts spontaneously; hence it is called non-retrogressing."
