「彌勒」者，此云慈氏也。過去值彌勒佛發願名彌勒也，出《一切智光仙人經》。彌勒昔作一切智光仙人，值慈氏佛說《慈心三昧經》，故曰慈也。《華嚴經》云：「初得慈心三昧故名慈」也。

'Maitreya' is translated here as 'The Benevolent One' (Cishi). In the past he encountered Maitreya Buddha and made a vow, hence being named Maitreya; this appears in the Sarvajñaprabha-ṛṣi Sūtra. Maitreya was formerly the hermit Sarvajñaprabha and encountered Cishi Buddha preaching the Maitrī-citta Samādhi Sūtra, hence he is called Benevolent. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: 'Because he first attained the maitrī-citta samādhi, he is named Benevolent.'
