In the first ten days of the ninth month of the guisi year of the Einin era, relying on the pure donations of the congregation of Kōryū-ji, the printing blocks for the first fascicle of the Meaning and Commentary were carved. I reflect that more than a thousand years have passed since the Han Emperor dreamed of the golden man, and seven hundred years since the supreme vehicle was transmitted to the realm of the rising sun, yet never was it heard that the true school of the Sanlun had blocks carved, how much less so for the ekayāna Commentary on the Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra! Here, though I, Sokei, was born in the remote land of Fusang, I have fortunately encountered this marvelous scripture of the udumbara blossom; if this commentary were not circulated, the propagation of the sūtra might also be obstructed. Therefore, exerting myself to the utmost, I wish to complete this great work of an entire set, encouraging and transforming, opening and clarifying the principal doctrine of the Lotus, aspiring to sprinkle the marvelous Dao throughout the ten-thousand-year void of the semblance and final eras, to hold up the lamp of the Dharma at the dawn of the three assemblies of the Dragon Flower, to purge the deluded attachments of the four modes of birth, and to awaken to the eightfold negation of the correct contemplation.
