Second, concerning the approach of explaining the greater or lesser number of meanings included: although there are twenty-eight chapters, their titles are derived in three ways: first, deriving their title from a single meaning; second, receiving their appellation from two meanings; third, designated by three meanings. As for deriving a title from a single meaning, four kinds are briefly explained: first, receiving a title from Dharma, such as the "Expedient Means Chapter" and the like; second, designated by a parable, such as the "Parable Chapter" and the like; third, receiving an appellation from a person, such as the "Devadatta Chapter" and the like; fourth, designated by an event, such as the "Emerging from the Earth Chapter" and the like. As for establishing a title from two meanings, either person and Dharma are both mentioned, as in the "Universal Gate Chapter of Avalokiteśvara" and the like; or the subject and object are combined as the designation, as in the "Apparition of the Jeweled Stūpa Chapter" and the like. As for establishing a title from three meanings, as in the "Conferment of Prophecy on Five Hundred Disciples Chapter," "five hundred" is a designation of number, "disciples" is the appellation of the persons, and "conferment of prophecy" is the designation of the Dharma.
