From "Yet now it is not actual extinction" onwards is the second [section], resolving doubts. Above, having adduced the unfulfillment of the original vow and the doubling of the number to explain that the future is without extinction, the assembly at that time doubted: "If so, why did he proclaim in the 'Apparition of the Jeweled Stūpa Chapter' that 'The Tathāgata before long will enter nirvāṇa,' and when answering Māra, set his own deadline that in three months he would enter nirvāṇa?" To resolve this doubt, the present passage occurs. Second, above it was explained that in the present world there are three periods of benefiting beings; now this is the third period. Again it is divided into three parts: first, setting forth the section headings of non-extinction and manifesting extinction; second, the explanation; third, the conclusion. In the first part, stating the two headings: "Yet now it is not actual extinction" states the reality of non-extinction. From "and yet proclaims" onwards states the expedient manifestation of extinction.
