Answer: This sūtra integrates the beginning and the end, opening the two expedient and two real [teachings]; hence there is no teaching that is not comprehensive, and no principle that is not complete. All who should attain the Way are present within this sūtra; therefore those who awaken to the Way are many. Second, in the Tathāgata’s single lifetime of teaching, there are generally three approaches: first, the approach of gathering the heterodox and returning them to the correct; second, the approach of gathering the divergent and returning them to the identical; third, the approach of gathering the cause and returning it to the effect. Prior to the Lotus Sūtra, there was only the first approach. The initial portion of this sūtra is called the approach of gathering the divergent and returning them to the identical; the latter portion of the sūtra is the approach of gathering the cause and returning it to the effect. Furthermore, as this sūtra integrates the beginning and the end, it is fully equipped with all three approaches. Since the three approaches comprehensively encompass principle and teaching, those who hear them all awaken to the Way. Third, among those transformed by Śākyamuni, there are generally two kinds of children: first, children who have lost their senses; second, children who have not lost their senses. The children who have not lost their senses, from the Avataṃsaka Sūtra at the beginning through to the Lotus Sūtra at the end, all awaken upon hearing the teachings; the remaining ones who have lost their senses wait until the Buddha announces his extinction and expounds the Nirvāṇa Sūtra before they gain understanding. Now, discerning that all among the children who have not lost their senses who were to awaken do indeed attain awakening, those who enter the Way are therefore many. There are generally two kinds of children who have not lost their senses: first, bodhisattvas who proceed straight ahead; second, those who turn back from the lesser and enter the great. Both of these two kinds of persons, upon hearing the Lotus Sūtra, attain awakening to the Way; hence they are many.
