The two sections of the sūtra each have substance and function. Regarding the substance and function of the expedient vehicle and the real vehicle: being neither three nor one, where words are cut off and thought is forgotten, is called the substance of the vehicle; previously expounding three for the sake of beings and now refuting the three to expound the one is called the function of the vehicle. Regarding substance and function in the expedient body and the real body: the dharmakāya being neither eternal nor impermanent, its lifespan being neither long nor short, with words also cut off and thought forgotten, is called the substance of the Buddha's body. Formerly impermanent and now eternal, formerly short and now long, is called the function of the body. In accordance with the substance and function of the two expedients and two reals, one gives rise to joy; thus there are characteristics of rejoicing in accord.
