The eighteen lines of verse versify the previous five persons, which constitutes five divisions, though not in order. The first nine lines versify the first; the next five lines versify the fourth. The reason for leaping over to versify the fourth is that both the fourth and the first persons have their merits explained at length, and are therefore versified in one place, while the remaining three are explained briefly, and are therefore versified together in another place. Furthermore, the one who rejoices in accord is a person who preaches the Dharma for others, and the fourth encourages others to listen to the Dharma, both being for the sake of others; their meanings complement each other, and so they are versified in one place. The next two lines versify the second; the next one line versifies the third. Since these concern going to the assembly and sharing a seat to invite someone to sit, their meanings are connected in kind, and so they are versified in succession. The final line versifies the fifth. The earlier first explanation of the prose had three parts; here the nine lines versify them completely: the first line and a half versifies the first; from "the final person" onward, six lines and a half versifies the second, evaluating against the two gifts; the next line versifies the third, using the later to contrast with the first.
