The Hīnayāna has three explanations: First, the *Vibhāṣā says, 'Three faculties cognize in contact: namely, nose, tongue, and body; three faculties cognize at a distance: namely, eye, ear, and mind.' The *Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya says, 'Two faculties cognize at a distance; the mind does not fall under distance or contact.' The *Satyasiddhi says, 'The eye only [cognizes at a] distance and not in contact; the nose, tongue, and body [cognize in] contact and not at a distance; the ear faculty is both in contact and at a distance—hearing external sounds is at a distance, while hearing ringing sounds in the ear is in contact; the mind faculty is neither at a distance nor in contact.' Why does it now say that the nose smells from afar?
